In spite of the adversity, Khairol discovered solace and purpose in archery, commencing his distinctive journey in 2016.
Employing creativity and persistence, he crafted a customized rig for his bow, integrating a piece of leather to facilitate his innovative draw and release technique using his mouth.
Describing the process, he said, “It was a trial-and-error process. But when I finally landed an arrow on the target using my molars for the draw, I knew I had unlocked a new chapter in my life.”
Khairol’s breakthrough occurred at a 50/60-meter traditional archery event in Selangor in 2017.
Being the only differently-abled archer present, he captured the hearts of the audience.
“My heart raced as people gathered around during my turns,” he recalled.
Even though he hit only one arrow on the target, the crowd’s encouragement and cheers only fueled his inspiration further.
Empowered by the backing he received, Khairol embarked on training with the Selangor state archery team as a Paralympic archer.
Making the transition to an Olympic Recurve Bow, he participated in numerous local competitions, refining his technique and striving for consistency.
While adapting to a heavier bow for the 70m distances in the Olympic Recurve class poses a challenge, Khairol remains determined.
Outside of competitive arenas, Khairol dedicates his time to nurturing future talents by coaching schoolchildren at his indoor range in Kampung Pandan, Kuala Lumpur.
His life story and coaching endeavors stand as a source of inspiration for many aspiring young archers.
Khairol’s journey bears resemblance to that of Indonesia’s legendary mouth archer, Kholidin. Having lost his right arm in a fall from a coconut tree, Kholidin transitioned from being a compound bow archer to becoming a Paralympic Barebow specialist.
Khairol’s extraordinary journey reached a pinnacle with a top-three finish and a special award at the Thailand Princess Cup Indoor archery tournament near Bangkok in 2019.
Securing the silver medal in the Men’s Barebow finals, he left an enduring impression on the archery world.
Kholidin’s brilliance continued to shine at the Teluk Intan Open archery tournament earlier this year, earning him widespread respect across the Indonesian archipelago and beyond.
His unwavering consistency and skills showcased in local tournaments and international meets have elevated him to a revered status within the archery community. Khairol and Kholidin epitomize the spirit of hope and steadfast determination, serving as inspirations not only in the archery world but for all who encounter their remarkable stories.
