The national championship closed in Negeri Sembilan with three national records — every one of them in barebow — and a result in the Olympic disciplines that nobody following Malaysian archery this year could call a surprise. The best compound woman in the country shot 703, led the field by fifteen points, and went out in the quarterfinal by one.
Fatin Nurfatehah Mat Salleh shot 703 over 72 arrows in the compound women’s ranking round at the Kejohanan Memanah Kebangsaan 2026 FINAL — 350 in the first half, 353 in the second, fifteen points clear of the next archer in the field. Two matches later she was finished. Putri Aqiera Issandra Binti Ismayuddin of Terengganu beat her 144–143 in the quarterfinal, and the most consistent compound archer Malaysia has ended the national championship in fifth place.
It is the exact shape of her Asian Games. In Aichi-Nagoya three weeks ago she qualified well and lost a match she was favoured to win. In Nilai she qualified better and lost a match she was overwhelmingly favoured to win. The distance between her ranking round and her match play has stopped looking like a run of bad draws and started looking like the defining feature of her season.
A ranking round is a test of shooting. A bracket is a test of shooting while somebody else is shooting back. Malaysia keeps passing the first one.
archery.my — analysisAcross the six individual events in Nilai, the archer who topped qualification went on to win the title exactly three times. Quik Chern Xin led recurve men with 677 and won it. Abdul Hanan Bin Abdul Basir led compound men with 702 and won it. Siti Aisyahtulradziah Mohd Zulkiflee led barebow women with 599 and won it. The other three top qualifiers — Fatin in compound women, Khairul Anuar Mohamad in barebow men, Ariana Nur Dania Mohamad Zairi in recurve women — managed one silver and one bronze between them, and a fifth place.
Quik is the counter-example worth holding on to. He topped the ranking round by sixteen points over Evan Rich Chong Qi Wei, then actually closed it out, beating Ahmad Mujahid Bin Muhamad Fuad 6–2 in the gold match. Four days of shooting and not a wobble in it. That is what a national number one is supposed to look like, and it is the only one of the four Olympic-discipline events where it happened.
PODIUM — the elite programme that sent its archers to Aichi-Nagoya — came to its own national championship and took one of the four Olympic-discipline titles. Quik’s recurve men gold was the whole of it. Ariana Nur Dania was beaten 7–3 in the recurve women’s final by Nur Qaireen Umairah Binti Norazlizal of Perlis, who had qualified sixth with 636 — twenty-seven points behind her. Muhammad Aiman Syafiq Bin Mohd Tariki lost the compound men’s final 145–138 to Perak’s Abdul Hanan. Fatin finished fifth.
The other three Olympic-discipline golds went to Perlis, Perak and MASUM. Read one way that is healthy: the domestic base is deep enough to beat the centralised squad on neutral ground. Read the other way, which is the way that matters eleven months out from a home SEA Games, the centralised squad was beaten on neutral ground by the domestic base.
Three national records fell in Nilai. All three were set on 16 October and all three were in barebow, the one discipline that is not on the Olympic or Asian Games programme. Khairul Anuar Mohamad of PDRM shot 335 over his second 36 arrows at 50m to break the barebow men’s record, and finished with 655 for 72 arrows to break that one too — twenty-one points clear of Muhammad Zahin Razak. Siti Aisyahtulradziah Mohd Zulkiflee of MASUM opened with 312 over her first 36 arrows for the barebow women’s record.
Siti Aisyahtulradziah went on to win her title 6–4 over Johor’s Siti Norharlisa Rinny Binti Masturi. Khairul Anuar did not. He lost his semifinal, took bronze 6–4 over Faizul Sutiara Mohd Shuib, and watched Norhisyam Ismail of Kelantan — fourth in qualification with 614, forty-one points behind the record — win the gold match 6–4. The pattern does not make exceptions for record-breakers.
Below the medals, the recurve men’s bracket did what it has done all year. Evan Rich Chong Qi Wei qualified second with 661 and finished twelfth. Muhammad Haiqal Danish Bin Syamsul Affandi qualified twelfth and finished eighth. Ahmad Mujahid Bin Muhamad Fuad of Kedah qualified eighteenth with 612 — sixty-five points off the lead — and shot his way to a silver medal.
Compound men gave the clearest single illustration. Muhammad Akmal Danial Bin Baharuddin, who shot 700 at SUKMA in August for a games record, qualified fourteenth here and went out in the first elimination round on a shoot-off: 144–144, one arrow each, 10 to Wong Co Wan and 8 to him. Wong went on to take bronze by a point. One arrow separated a quarterfinalist from a man who finished ninth.
Three archers topped qualification and won. Three topped qualification and did not. Over a four-day national championship, that is a coin toss.
archery.my — analysisMalaysia hosts the SEA Games in September 2027, with archery in the Sarawak cluster. That is eleven months from now. Nothing in Nilai suggested the scores are the problem: 703 in compound women, 702 in compound men, 677 in recurve men, a barebow national record broken twice in an afternoon. Malaysian archers can shoot numbers.
What Nilai did suggest is that the thing Aichi-Nagoya exposed three weeks ago has not been touched. A home national championship, familiar field, no travel, no time zone, no foreign crowd — the easiest possible place to show that the match-play problem was being worked on. It was not shown.
